Process
Examine the target audience
The first part of the client-designer collaboration is to identify who the site is for. This helps to establish the correct visual language, information architecture, and features to include from day one.
Create prototype layout
After identifying the general style plus the essential visual elements, the web designer produces a static or interactive prototype. This is a rough draft that shows the client where the marketing materials will be placed, alongside the site menu and navigation structure.
Make layout available for client viewing
The prototype layout is sent to the client, usually in the form of a graphic file snapshot (JPEG, PNG, etc.). However, some expert developers actually allow a client to visit the site as it's being made. This is done by uploading all updates into a temporary web address, which allows the client to view work in progress in real time.
Integrate client's recommendations
There are times when a client requests changes to the prototype layout before it's actually implemented. These recommendations may be about the kind of fonts used, the colour scheme, or even the general appearance of the site itself. In relatively rare cases where the client totally rejects the prototype layout, the web designer will go back to step two and restart the whole process.
Finalise design
If the client requests just simple, minor suggestions, it's now time for the web designer to integrate these ideas into the layout. The designer may also change some elements of the site based on what the client likes about the prototype. After this process, the web development phase begins.
